Time and Space

Jandek

Another favorite use of music in a film I directed is this track from Mr. Sterling Smith himself — who has operated Corwood Industries since 1978 releasing his own music. I was intrigued by the man and his massive, expanding catalog and fell in love with quite a few of his records over the years. You won’t find them on Spotify — only a handful of tracks — and one of them is TIME AND SPACE. How lucky am I that his song is in our film and on our Official Calvin Marshall Soundtrack? It has this drunken, bar room tempo — great, electric guitars, drums and wild vocals.

I’m not sure I’ve ever told this story, but during editorial I wrote to Jandek and described the scene and how I would use the song. He didn’t have an email address on his site — just a P.O. Box — so I put it on Broken Sky Films letter-head and mailed him the letter. I explained that COACH LITTLE gets drunk and belligerent at the Hillbilly and is carried out by a bouncer and tossed on his head. During his exit, TIME AND SPACE would play on the juke box diegetically. Then — later — the song would creep back in as score while Coach falls apart on the field. I was excited about this idea.

Weeks later, he sent back my letter where he’s written in longhand that I could have all rights to his song unequivocally and it wouldn’t cost anything. I remember having so much respect for Jandek in that moment. He’s walked to the beat of his own drum his entire life. Just living the “art life” and doing an amazing job at it. He’s a hero of mine.

Right here you can watch the SEQUENCE from Calvin Marshall. 🎬🎵🥃
