The Honest Truth

Typhoon

No easy way to transition away from the Beatles, so I didn’t need a clever reason to land on this great band. It was just that their A NEW KIND OF HOUSE EP came to mind over coffee this a.m.

I never said I was honest, but I am true…

I often think of Portland bands. It’s just one of those great west coast cities where you find great artists — the kind of city that inspires. Portlandia is based on reality. Some of my big favorites off the top of my head? Chromatics, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, Thermals, Shins, Built to Spill — just to name a few…

So this morning I’m pivoting from the world’s best and most famous band to a great one that’s not very well known. And so another rabbit hole presents itself. Bands from Portland you may not have heard of just feels fun and exciting to me.

TYPHOON has one of these hopeful sounds I love. Big hooks, choruses and horns. Brings to mind Frightened Rabbit and Black Country, New Road. I fell for this EP way back when in 2011 — when I permanently moved to the northwest. This little EP welcomed me home back then with some real hope. Highly recommended.

And I really love the video, worth a watch. Kyle walking around his Portland neighborhood carrying a (wooden) baseball bat and coffee mug. And that singalong chorus in the living room is divine.

You’re gonna piss and moan, you let the devil in your home… ❤️

Eternity will smile
Eternity will smile
Eternity will smile
Eternity will smile
On me

I never said I was honest
I never said I was honest
But I am true
And I am true

We all see something different
We all recall something different
When we watch the parade go marching through

So be kind to all of your neighbors
Be kind to all of your neighbors
‘Cuz they're just like you
They're just like you

And you're nothing special
Unless they are too

All my time I've walked a filed line
I held a vacant sign upon my eyelids
Oh my time, oh Lord, I've been so blind
But now I see the light peep through my doorjamb

Hallelujah, it will be gone soon, yeah
It will be gone soon, yeah

It's just an empty room
This is our darkest cave
We'll never see the day
But slowly make our way up to the mouth

You're gonna piss and moan
You let the devil in your home
You let the devil in your home
You let the devil in your home

Piss and moan
You let the devil in your home
You let the devil in your home
You let the devil in your home
Devil in your home
