Long Drawn Sunday Night
The Orchids
A band I’ve loved for a long time — one of those special groups who are totally unique and still together making music. And their records just make me feel good when I play them. I have most of them on vinyl and I love to play them loud. They’ve been called “twee” and indie-pop, but I don’t think genre labels do this band justice. They have songs that rock. They have dark songs. Songs that defy categories. They are artists and great songwriters — and you get the feeling they just follow those impulses wherever they lead. Looking back on my Songs of the Day, they have only been featured once. It was back in APRIL with Striving for the Lazy Perfection.
So I’ll be going down a little Orchids rabbit hole while I get ready to leave on vacation with my family later this week. This tune is a heartbreaker — the great bass line and guitars and those melancholy vocals from James Hackett. Only a little over two minutes, the gentleness and sweetness of this track kills me every time.
I know there’s a light in my eyes…
It was the perfect song to begin my short film Wow & Flutter — specifically the first song on David’s little mix tape. And I’m forever in debt to Matt Haynes at Sarah Records and guitarist John Scally who helped me license it.
