Clouds

The Choir

One more from this band before moving on. I got to meet them on this tour and was surprised how young and shy they were. Probably because they were never fully embraced by the music industry and certainly not by MYRRH records or “Christian” music — which was getting worse and worse — perhaps it was at an all time low. And this sprawling song? It’s about doubt and the shadows that veil our eyes. I’m not sure how this band cooked up this fantastic record — but they sure caught lightning in a bottle. It still sounds great and it transcends both genre and the 80’s. To me it sounds like 2022. And this seven minute classic is almost too short for me. I love Hindalong’s drums coursing through the track and Derri’s ringing guitars — especially in the chorus. Feels so obvious now why no church or youth group ever embraced this great band. They were too good for the boxes they wanted them to play in. Love this long, droning song about doubt and the final, ironic hymn — a real one sung by Derri’s mom on Sunday morning. 😁

The blood remains as red
That colours our spirits white
The blood remains as warm
That paints black skies with fire
The word remains as high
That commands the snake to crawl
The promise ever true
That shatters the venom vile

But clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Shadows veil your eyes

The love remains as pure
That poisoned seas will ne'er dilute
The love remains a flame
That many waters can not quench

But clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Shadows veil your eyes

The ghost is ever bruised
Who defends me when I fall
The ghost is ever sure
Who holds tight for precious life
The blood remains as rich
That poor sinners drink like wine
The blood remains as warm
That paints black skies with fire

And clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Shadows veil your eyes
Clouds are round about you
Clouds are round about you
Shadows veil your eyes
Shadows veil your eyes
Shadows veil your eyes
(Clouds are round about you)
Shadows veil your eyes
