I’m Deranged

David Bowie

I was enjoying Brian Eno music yesterday, and it got me thinking about Bowie. Eno produced LOW, HEROES and LODGER — a brilliant trio of records that changed the entire trajectory of Bowie’s career.

David Bowie was always a visionary, but these first Eno collaborations stoked his fire for more avant-garde work. A fire that may have eventually led him to play Philip Jeffries in FIRE WALK WITH ME? And also perhaps to providing this amazing track for the opening of LOST HIGHWAY? 🤔

David Lynch’s masterpiece might be my most memorable movie going experience — a packed house, opening night in ‘97 at the old Laemmle Sunset 5. In the first few seconds I remember this song playing loud in 5.1 as we began barreling down the lost highway in the opening credits. It had me grinning for awhile, until I was terrified. Driving back to Santa Barbara that night, I was still under Lynch’s spell — a surreal, wonderful, unsettling film.

And Bowie’s record OUTSIDE? It’s dark and very underrated. So often completely forgotten. It was the 4th album Eno produced for Bowie and it was influenced by Twin Peaks. Brian Eno co-wrote this electronic tour de force which led to Bowie touring and working with Trent Reznor — a collaboration that would’ve been impossible to predict.
