Hard Drive

Evan Dando

The Jon Brion produced BABY I’M BORED showcases some of Evan’s best songs. Love this record so much and the deluxe edition is a real treat, unearthing twelve new tracks. Played this album a lot back in 2003 — we even caught his solo gig that year at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica before we left town. That was a big “leaving LA” year for me.

2003 was the year my script MVP had been optioned and not produced by a production company. After a truly miserable experience re-writing the script with them, I knew I had to get out of a grim situation. Luckily they signed the script back over to me and MVP became CALVIN MARSHALL And we got it produced four years later.

But 2003 was important, because it really lit a fire under me. I learned to choose my partners carefully, and how to take matters into my own hands. It’s a skill I needed to hone if I was going to direct any movies. I had already been trying for awhile, so this was the wake up call and spring board I needed. It led directly to our sojourn to the cabin in the woods and our short film WOW AND FLUTTER.

This beautiful record was such a highlight during that time. Most of these are Evan’s songs, but this one’s a cover. It’s a song that just drops me into the present tense — a big reason I love this hypnotizing track. If we’re lucky, we get many seasons in life — and it’s so meditative to call out what’s happening to us right now with gratitude. Our lives in motion.

This is the town I'm living in
This is the street I'm walking down
These are the friends I'm visiting
These are the clothes I'm wearing now
This is the house I'm building here
This is the girl I'm marrying
This is the chord I'm strumming now
This is the faith I'm leaning on

This is the child I'm bearing now
This is the love that I've always had
This is the face I make when I'm sad
This is the town I'm living in
This is the hard drive...
This is the ocean
Have you ever felt yourself in motion
Have you ever felt yourself in motion

These are the feet I'm standing on
These are the hands that build a world
This is the bed I'm sleeping in
This is the shirt I'm buttoning
This is the pace I'm moving at
This is the tune I'm humming now
This is the road I'm walkin' down
These are the lips that form my words

This is the stone that I wanna turn
These are the people that I love
These are the eyes that look above
This is the town I'm living in
This is the hard drive
This is the ocean
Have you ever felt yourself in motion
Have you ever felt yourself in motion
