Before the Day Begins

Adrian Borland

God I love how Adrian named this album 5AM and ended this terrific record with a song called BEFORE THE DAY BEGINS. Because those demons come for us at night. In our sleeplessness. Especially as we get older, because we don’t sleep as well. All those fears. All those feelings of doubt.

My doubts are the strongest in those muddled early morning hours spent dreaming, waking and sleeping.

And I so often feel relieved in the morning.

It’s not so bad. It really isn’t. And then I feel grateful. The ebb and flow of being human. Being filled with hope and then doubt. A restless tide.

This live version kills me. So beautiful and pure — before the song was released and only a couple years before he died. 💔

What were you waiting for?
What twist of fate?
Whatever you were waiting for
Never came
What were you dreaming of?
What kind of special love?
Each time drawn in like a moth
To the flame
Lying there with your open eyes
And your dying innocence
When you drowned in the sea of life
Did your own one make no sense
What were you hoping for?
What kind of flavor?
Just to know that life could be so sweet
Only to leave a bitter taste
What were you praying for ?
What kind of savior?
Whoever you were waiting for
Never came
Lying there with your open eyes
And your dying innocence
When you drowned in the sea of life
Did your own one make no sense?
Before the day begins
Do you thank your stars or count your sins
Or think of all the finer things
That finally came?
