White Rose Transmission

Headed down the Adrian Borland rabbit hole for a few days and it is…rich...

When I first committed to doing my Song of the Day discipline, I knew I would choose each song (almost) clairvoyantly and do it f a s t and write about it without thinking too much. It’s the only way it could work with how much time I could give. And I really did assume I’d seek out a new band each day — because there are only 365 spots in 2022 and there are too many songwriters and bands that require representation.

But what I didn’t count on? Was the continuity aspect of this exercise. Once you start down a path, you want to build on it — some kind of monument to something; a decade, a style, a songwriter, a movement. A sound.

So this brings us to today — one of my favorite songwriters of all time who died way too young. He was one of these guys who walked around at any given time with songs, lyrics and riffs in his head. Dozens and dozens of songs — too many to record and most never recorded. Yesterday we heard the first track off JEOPARDY, the debut record from THE SOUND. Today we get this beauty from Adrian’s side project WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION, a two album collaboration with the brilliant Carlo Van Putten. Carlo wrote the words and Adrian wrote the music. I don’t have a translation of the lyrics, but what a gorgeous, uplifting song with an ironic title that translates: ALONE.
