Striving for the Lazy Perfection

The Orchids

One of my favorite bands — and I’m so thrilled they’re still playing gigs and have a new record coming out this year. There are many Orchids songs I could choose this morning, but this one jumped out. The spirit of this song celebrates a kind of reconciliation, and the vocals and electronica are pure positivity. This is the title track of their third record, and for me it evokes an ideal approach to good living and art creating — because I always want a lazy, trusting element in my quest, to always keep it fun.

NOTE: On discovering the Orchids….this notion of music choosing me is a concept I love. Of course I can’t explain the mechanics of it, but I’ve found that if I stay open and look in the right places, certain records and bands land with me. In the early nineties, I was trying to hunt down a copy of Adrian Borland’s ALEXANDRIA at Tower Records in San Francisco and failed. Instead, I ended up reading about “twee” music and Sarah Records in their alternative music newspaper. This great UK label found me that day, and I don’t believe it was just dumb luck. Sarah has so many great bands, but my favorite is The Orchids. I get a little emotional when I think of this band, as it took me awhile to collect all their records over the years. Thanks to the internet, I connected with Sarah (Clare and Matt) and licensed the song LONG DRAWN SUNDAY NIGHT for a short film I made called WOW AND FLUTTER. And recently we licensed PELICAN BLONDE for our movie PHOENIX, OREGON. ❤️
