Sad Face

The Choir

I’ve enjoyed how Nick Cave has written so eloquently and specifically about spiritual things lately — faith, God, struggle. Hope. He writes in this Red Hand File Q&A, that hopefulness is the warrior emotion. Why? Because it can lay waste to cynicism.

Lately I’ve had discussions with friends about doubt and lack of faith. We’ve asked the hard questions. How has our faith changed and how is it changing as we get older? How has it not changed? Anyone who has flirted or engaged with religion at some point in their life has had deep, dark doubts and regrets. There are just too many skeletons in the closets of all religions.

I don’t want to get too personal about this now, because this is Song of the Day after all — a place where I write about music I love. And this one here is from a band I love called THE CHOIR from their terrific record CHASE THE KANGAROO. I love Derri’s guitars in this and the mediative drumming from Steve Hindalong. And it’s true — the ebb and flow of sadness strengthens the heart.

In my late teens and early twenties, THE CHOIR was a pivotal band for me who I still listen to decades later. I still find hope in a lot of their music — because most of it is about things I still believe in. Like doubt, pain, love, forgiveness. And hope. The kind of hope that can lay waste to cynicism.

There's a crystal in the window
Throwing rainbows around
There's a girl by the mirror
And her feet won't touch the ground
'Cause she never saw the sky so bright
Isn't that like a cloud to come by night?
Nevermind the sky
There's a tear in her eye

A sad face is good for the heart
Go on cry, does it seem be a cruel world?
A sad face is good for the heart of a girl
A sad face

There's a woman in my kitchen
With a rainbow on her cheek
Well isn't that a promise?
Still I never felt so weak
There's a tiny spirit in a world above
Cradled so sweetly in our Father's love
So you don't have to cry
No there's something in my eye

A sad face is good for the heart
Maybe just now, I don't understand
A sad face is good for the heart of a man
A sad face is good for the heart
It's alright, you don't have to smile
A sad face is good for the heart of a child
For the heart of a child
For the heart of a child
For the heart of a child
A sad face
A sad face
A sad face
