One of my favorite artists was on my mind this morning because he is on tour now. I met Damien at a show over twenty years ago and was so awe-struck that my mouth couldn’t form words. One of the few time’s that’s ever happened to me. Damien’s best songs are like these timeless short stories, and this one would be right at home on NEBRASKA. It is filled with disturbing details that haunt and just feel real. The hero of this sad story tries to keep his affair a secret and also keep his brother from losing his mind. Something I really admire about Damien is that he chose to begin his masterpiece GHOST OF DAVID with such a stark song like this. But that glockenspiel he holds back until the last minute or so? It is such a beautiful touch and adds just the right amount of levity and empathy to this poor guy’s journey and final request. ❤️
