All I Think About Now
Pixies
Such a terrific band — ahead of its time with their signature quiet - loud - quiet style that influenced Nirvana, grunge and countless other bands. Fusing indie rock/pop and hard rock — real singing and screaming. Black Francis did both so well and still does.
I was feeling HEY from DOOLITTLE, but then started thinking about Kim Deal. 💔 Specifically how sad I feel when great bands break up and go their separate ways. Our heroes getting divorced. And Kim’s voice is unmistakable and so important to these early records.
Luckily though, we’ve been in the Paz Lenchantin years. For awhile — six to be exact with three solid records. And I really like her. No, she doesn’t replace Kim, but she’s a great fit. And if she gets along with everyone and helps make more great Pixies records? Then count me as a big fan with no complaints.
Just listen to this tune — it already sounds like classic Pixies to me. Sure it’s a familiar riff but what a song. It’s aged well.
Paz’s vocals — on a song written for Kim — are so beautifully done. They have power and sincerity. And the Black Francis lyrics have tenderness and longing. We feel his regret about how easily ego and conflict can grow and do real damage. Not just in bands but in friendships and families.
But this is still a song about remembering what was actually true. They were happy, and there is real gratitude here.
I try to think about tomorrow
But I always think about the past
About the things that didn't last
If I could go to the beginning
Then for sure I would be another way
Make it better for today
If I could go to the beginning
I would be another way
Make it better for today
Remember when we were happy?
If I'm late can I thank you now?
I'm gonna try anyhow
I remember we were happy
That's all I think about now
That's all I think about now
I remember we were happy
That's all I think about now
If you have any doubt
I want to thank you anyhow
