(A Year Ahead) …and a Light

Richard Buckner

He’s been on my mind since yesterday’s song. I saw him as an opening act in Ventura ‘97, shortly after DEVOTION + DOUBT came out. And it’s his set I remember, because I can’t even recall the headliner.

Years later I saw him play Largo in LA and I spoke with him for a few minutes at the merch table. He already seemed beaten down by the grind of making a living as a musician. This man is an artist through and through. Just listen to his records — he’s a mad, genius songwriter and an excellent guitar player. His music transcends genre — don’t even call him alt-country because it doesn’t quite fit. This tune right here is infectious and totally unique — with lyrics that almost feel like an e.e. cummings poem. Love this guy and wish the world (and music biz) made more space for this kind of talent.
